Educational Evaluations For Students

Parents are sometimes asked to have their student tested individually by a psychologist. This could be asked as part of the application to an independent school or to determine if the student is appropriate for a Gifted or Challenge program. Other reasons for testing include: to determine if there is a learning difficulty, address issues around ADHD, or to see if early Kindergarten placement is in order.

Gifted and Challenge Programs

Parents sometimes request assessments for public school Gifted and Challenge Programs to be given outside the regular school.  While school districts are not required to accept independent test results, our experience has been very positive in this regard.  The testing results, along with other information from parents and teachers, can then  be used to help the school's Multidisciplinary Team determine the best educational placement for your child.  For further information, please contact our offices.

Educational Evaluations

In cases where parents or schools believe a student is “not working up to potential,” or “has difficulty paying attention,”  or “unable to complete the homework,”  it may be determined that additional diagnostic tests would provide insight into why the student is not performing as expected. In this case, the parent and psychologist will fully discuss the student’s medical and educational history, personality, and family structure prior to setting up the most appropriate test battery to identify possible interferences to achievement.

The types of measures chosen will usually consist of intelligencegeneral achievement, diagnostic math and/or reading/spelling testssocial, emotional, and/or behavioral development, as well as parent and teacher checklists, and any other assessment appropriate to the presenting problem. It is not unusual for a psychologist to include an assessment of ADHD, executive function and/or neurological function in a battery. A computer-based program, the IVA+ Plus, is helpful in diagnosing ADD and ADHD.

Recommendations for additional assessments by vision and hearing specialists, occupational and physical therapists, and/or a psychiatrist may be included in the extensive list of recommendations made from the results of the assessment.

Assessments Required for Receiving Accommodations

MLES can usually provide documentation for students with a diagnosed disability who require special accommodations when taking the SAT, GRE, MCAP, or other standardized tests.  Please allow at least four weeks post-assessment for the report to be ready when scheduling. There may be time, age or test restrictions.

Scheduling and Fees

Appointments for individual assessments must be made through the psychologists.  Flexible test schedules permit testing to occur mornings, afternoons and on weekends, depending upon the age of the child.

Fees for Individual Assessments are based upon multiple factors, including the anticipated length of tests and complexity of the issues at hand. Fees can be paid by check or credit card at the time of the assessment.  Special fee arrangements can be discussed with the psychologist prior to testing.
